Its motivation is to give space to voices that primarily come from the eastern part of the old continent, which, in our experience, tend to go unheard. This is true on many levels, whether within the framework of the European or global artistic practice or doubtlessly also in social scientific debates on the topic of decolonisation, which are so crucial for understanding not only the past but also the ramifications we continue to experience to date.

“Let everyone be heard” is another way of putting the message of this issue tied to this year’s Fotograf Festival of the same name, the guest curators of which are Noemi Smolíková and Adam Vačkář.

A grand art nouveau building formerly belonging to Lajos Ernst, collector and patron of the Hungarian art scene, now houses the Robert Capa Centre – Contemporary Photography Centre. The house, located in central Budapest, was mostly intended for Lajos Ernst’s extensive collection, but it also houses a large cinema. The space continues fulfilling its cultural mission, providing a home, since 2013, to the aforementioned organization, an institute for visual art and photography.

If we look at them through the lens of a mass phenomenon, they may even be similarly old. And it is in this perspective that a number of controversial questions arise in all their clarity. To what extent has tourism affected many of the coastlines and unique destinations that attract tourists? And to what extent does photography influence our perception of the places we visit?
